Education and labour market integration : the significance of poverty, educational origin and labour market integration of the parents for the life situation of children and young people
Abstract
"In this article, it is a question of proving an overview in excerpts of the effect of the experience of poverty in childhood and youth on the life chances of people as they grow up. From the perspective of the life course, the aim is to find out what transitions into the educational system are of particular weight. The focus is on the significance of poverty for the participation of children and young people in education. A person is seen as poor, if he/she receives state benefits in the form of Hartz IV. The living and educational situations of children under 15 years of age and 15- to 25-year-olds whose households draw means-tested unemployment benefit (ALG II) are compared those of persons of the same age whose households do not receive such benefits in accordance with Book II of the Social Code (SGB II). In doing so, especial attention is paid to sections of the life course which represent neuralgic points in the individual educational career. These are: transition between primary and secondary school, school time at secondary school, educational certificates gained, the transition from school to working life, and the exit from drawing means-tested unemployment benefit (ALG II)."
