The Publishing Editor as a Liberal Profession

Abstract

"The free publishing editor (lector) is still often equated with the corrector's or editor's profession. Actually, however, the profession of the - economically independent - publishing editor includes the formulation of headlines, labelling, content summaries and authors' biographies; it requires stylistic, content-related, and grammatical competence, and constitutes a form of creative writing. Thereby, the free publishing editor features important characteristics of a liberal profession. Since, however, according to § 18 Section 1 EStG (income tax law), the free publishing editor is not a registered profession such as the translator, the assessment of particular cases mainly depends on legislation. Apart from a general presentation of the profession, this eleven-page brochure compiles important verdicts and refers to relevant literature." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku)
