Arbeiten und Lernen im Wandel

Abstract

"The IAB-ALWA study (Work and Learning in a Changing World) was conducted between September 2007 and March 2008 on behalf of the IAB. The aim of this representative telephone survey was to collect systematically educational and employment histories of 10,000 adults who were between 18 and 50 years old. The aim of the coding process was to generate codes from the open text answers of questions about occupations, occupational ambition, vocational training and economic sector. First the theoretical basis of the coding process of the open text answer of the occupation with the help of the Dokumentationskennziffer (documentation figure (DKZ) from the Frederal Employment Agency will be outlined. Next the technical implementation is described which can be organized into several steps: an automatic coding, a manual coding and the handling of problematic cases. Afterwards the coding process for vocational training and courses is described. Additionally, the coding process for economic sectors with the help of the German classification WZ08 (Klassifikation der Wirtschaftszweige, Ausgabe 2008) is illustrated. Finally, the coder training and the quality assurance of the coding is explained and a conclusion is drawn." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
