Entitlement to Providing Training, Training Activity, and Further Employment of Trainees in Companies

Abstract

The basis of the indicators on the entitlement to providing vocational training, training activity, and the further employment of trainees is an IAB expert report in which these and other indicators are described and reported in detail. This illustration is provided for the whole of Germany as well as differentiating between East and West and in company size. Over the course of time, little change is found concerning entitlement to providing training. The percentage of companies entitled to providing training ranges between 52 and 57 per cent. Between East and West Germany, there is a largely constant difference of about ten percentage points among companies not entitled to providing training. The share of companies entitled increases with company size. Regarding actual training activity, it is found that currently, little more than half of the companies entitled to providing training are to be labelled 'active'. Differences across years 2000 through 2007 are rather small, although the figures for the West German federal states during the last three observations are slightly above those for the Eastern states. Regarding establishment size, it is found that the share of active companies increases with size (from 41 per cent among small establishments up to 95 per cent among large establishments). The percentage of trainees who are offered regular employment after completing vocational education and training was 95 per cent in 2007, according to the IAB Establishment Panel. This share is positively correlated with establishment size in the West German states. In the Eastern states, it is rather medium-sized establishments that further employment after completed training is found in. (IAB)
