The labour market in the construction sector : Developments in 2010. Sectoral report

Abstract

"The report gives information about important labour market figures in the construction sector. Here, not only the status quo in 2010 is presented (as far as data is available) but also the developments over the last decade. This begins with an overview of the development in persons involved in gainful employment. On account of its importance for the construction sector, this is followed by observations on self-employment. After that, the analysis of employment subject to social security contributions forms the central point of the first chapter. Once the main economic areas, occupations, sizes of establishments and regions have been dealt with, information on working time, gender, nationality and age structures provide an overview of the persons employed in the construction sector. Predictions on the development of gross earnings over the last decade close the analysis of employment subject to social security contributions. The second chapter of this report is devoted to the demand for labour in the construction industry. After a brief presentation of the current macroeconomic supply of jobs, the situation and development of the jobs registered will be looked at in detail. Along with a consideration according to economic branches, this above all contains analyses specific to the construction industry of average vacancy time, distribution throughout the registered economic branches, time limits and the development according to regions. After this, Chapter 3 deals with the counterpart to the above, the supply of labour, subgrouped into unemployment, the training market and the situation at German universities. First we look at the extent of unemployment in the occupations found in the construction sector, then their age-specific distribution, average length when terminated as well as the regional presentation according to Federal States. In presenting the situation on the training market, new contracts, dissolution of contracts, as well as the extent of lack of congruence between supply and demand in the form of unfilled training positions and applicants without a job is in the foreground. Last but not least, the potential of new generations in the construction trades is described, dealing with those commencing their studies, those who have completed their studies and those who have discontinued their studies."
