Comparison of the delineation of German functional labour market regions

Abstract

"In this paper four different functional delineations, which are based on administrative districts, are analysed and compared with each other. These administrative districts cover Eckey/Kosfeld/Türck's (2006) 150 labour markets, Kropp/Schwengler's (2011a) 50 labour-market regions, 270 labour-market regions assessed by the Joint Task Force on the 'Improvement of the Regional Economic Structure', and 96 administrative regions examined by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development. Furthermore, two delineations of administrative districts (176 employment agencies of the Federal Employment Agency and 413 city and rural districts) are analysed. The results show that the quality of delineations that have fewer units that vary in size is much better. This quality decreases with an increasing number of units. However, smaller units might be more suitable for practical application." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
