Apprenticeship training and business success
Abstract
"For years, the number of firm-based apprenticeship places has been declining. This article aims to identify the relevant determinants of firms' decisions to offer new apprenticeship places. In addition to firmspecific characteristics that reflect the structure of plants, 'firm's expectations regarding their business development' are included in the analysis. This is done to capture business cyclical effects at the micro level. It is assumed that a change in a firm's business expectations influences the cost-utility assumption of the firm's training decision and leads to a change in the supply of apprenticeship places. The empirical findings show that firms respond sensitively to varying business expectations. An asymmetric response to changes in the firm's specific business cycle expectations is remarkable: while a decline induces a reduction in the probability of offering new apprenticeship places, a business upturn does not directly lead to an increase in the number of such places."
