Europe's diverse labour force
Abstract
"The aim of the paper is to provide some substantial contribution to the question, why the impact of cultural diversity on regional labour markets differs. Concerning the six biggest German cities, we analyse how labour market participation, occupations and unemployment of foreigners and domestic population differ. Additionally we investigate whether systematic differences regarding these issues can be found between the analysed cities. Using data of the Federal Statistical Office Germany and a detailed micro-data-set (IABS), which includes very reliable individual wage information, the corresponding results are linked to the overall location conditions in the cities at hand aiming at describing in which types of cities cultural diversity is pronounced. In this part of the analysis integration concepts applied on the city level are of special interest. The paper concludes with implications regarding policy concepts suited to contribute to labour market integration of foreign population enhancing overall development of cities."
