Are we running out of workers?

Abstract

"Demographic change, as the largest long-term challenge, must be differentiated from the change in economic and institutional conditions that are without a doubt currently strongly influencing the labour market. In the next ten years, the supply of labour in Germany will drop by up to ten per cent, measured against the labour force potential, and in the next forty years by up to forty per cent, unless considerable efforts are made to make better use of the domestic and foreign potential of the labour market. The sustainable development of the labour force potential is thus a central question in the economic and social future of Germany. Against this background, this article will first examine the current bottlenecks visible in the labour market and then elaborate in more detail the long-term drop in the supply of labour and its consequences for the labour market, economic growth and the social state. Finally, political options for action will be discussed." (text excerpt, IAB-Doku) ((en))
