Children and the labour market integration of their parents - and the role of child care
Abstract
"The aim of this article is to show what relevance the gainful employment of mothers has for the financial situation of families and children (Section 2). Building upon this, we will describe which factors a gainful employment of mothers depends on (Section 3) and what defines the neediness of mothers according to SGB II (Book II of the Social Code) (Section 4). In doing so, child care is taken into account in two respects: on the one hand, as the child-care effort to be carried out within the household. This is made up of the age of the youngest child and the number of children. What is examined is how this child-care effort influences neediness and the probability that a mother is in gainful employment. On the other hand previous findings are discussed, such as the effect of availability of public child care on both aspects (gainful employment and transfer benefits) (Section 5) and who it is that can take advantage of the still-limited child-care places in Germany (Section 6)."
