Between the effect of families and institutional control : intervals in the paid employment because of family commitments of women in the eastern and western parts of Germany and the GDR
Abstract
"The German reunification of 1990 brought together into one state two states that had been separated from each other since 1949 but which shared a long common history. Within a few months, it not only drastically changed the lives of over 18 million citizens of the GDR but also had a great influence on the West German population. A great deal of turbulence and a great many structural adjustments in the most varied spheres of life were the result. One area in which there were particularly large differences between West Germany and the GDR - and hence where correspondingly serious changes were to be expected - was the gainful employment of women who had children, along with the attitude of the public to this."
