Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania - from transformation crisis to EU eastern enlargement
Abstract
"Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is a rural, peripheral region that has undergone dramatic structural change during the transformation process. The results of our analysis suggest that location conditions have had different effects, despite severe economic problems. Economic conditions are characterised by pronounced regional disparities. As regards the determinants of regional employment growth, we arrive at some remarkable findings. This applies in particular to the negative impact of relatively high regional wages and a positive region-specific effect. The latter possibly reflects favourable location conditions for low-paid jobs of low-skilled workers. Thus, empirical evidence points to deficits that call for action of local economic policy. With regards to long-term growth prospects, the most pressing problems are the comparatively low human capital endowment and the strong emigration of young qualified workers."
