Hamburg - the economy and labour market in metropolitan areas

Abstract

"Focusing an the relationship between economics and the labour market, this study charts the development of metropolitan areas in Germany between 1993 and 2005. Specific problems, such as the relationship between the centre and suburban regions, are illustrated using the example of the metropolitan area of Hamburg. The research is mainly based an the results from a research programme, 'Comparative Analysis of Regional Labour Markets (VALA)', which was conducted by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB). Economic factors (wage levels, industrial structure, education levels, and size of enterprises) and region-specific causes of different labour market developments are considered."
