North-Rhine Westphalia - economic crisis in the Ruhr area dominates employment
Abstract
"North-Rhine Westphalia (NRW) is Germany's most densely populated federal state, and has suffered the highest rate of employment decline. This is mainly due to significant job losses in the Ruhr area. This paper shows that the negative rate of employment growth in the Ruhr area can be explained by an unfavourable distribution of industries, firm size and qualification, but, more importantly, by local conditions. Such location-related disadvantages may rest on the Ruhr area's unique settlement structure that has evolved during its industrialisation." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
