Abstract

"The high number of unfilled apprenticeship places has been one of the greatest challenges in the apprenticeship market for years. One possible, yet little-researched cause is that apprentices who have already been scheduled change their minds. Against this background, the BIBB Report uses data from the BA-BIBB-IAB Applicant Study 2024 to examine how many young people continue to search for apprenticeship positions despite having signed a contract and why they do so. The findings reveal that only a small proportion of young people with apprenticeship contracts continue their search. Based on the open-ended reasons, three overarching motives could be identified, including indications that career orientation has not yet been completed. The findings not only expand the understanding of the causes of unfilled apprenticeship places but also highlight potential approaches to address continued search behaviour beyond the conclusion of a contract."
