Abstract

"The growth of temporary work in Germany was very strong in the 1990s, even if its level remained modest compared with many other industrialized economies. Using data from the 2002 wave of the IAB Establishment Panel, 1 examine the role of temporary work as a business personnel strategy. Specifically, what is the relation between temporary work and other instruments of flexibility such as overtime working, working hours accounts, and fixed-term employment contracts, and what factors promote or hinder the use of temporary work. These issues assume greater importance because of the reregulation of temporary work at the national and international levels, and the establishment of subsidized temporary employment agencies."
