The statistical measurement of startups in Germany : comparison of social insurance statistics, Mannheim foundation panels and business registration statistics
Abstract
"This paper summarizes main results of a comparison of three data bases that provide information on startup activities in Germany. Based on our analyses we conclude that the establishment file of the Social Insurance Statistics and the Mannheim Foundation Panels provide relatively reliable indicators of new firm formation. Compared to these sources, the information of the official Business Registration Statistics appears to be by far less accurate, particularly with regard to the number of startups. The methods and definitions applied in raising and preparing the data have implications for the sectoral and the regional structure of startup information." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
