Temporary Part-Time Work has Room for Expansion. Results of the IAB Establishment Panel 2022 on Establishment Distribution and Personnel Policy Reactions

Abstract

"Part-time work is widespread in Germany, but often has considerable disadvantages for employees. To diminish the risk of involuntary part-time work and to enhance the transition between full-time and part-time work, the “Temporary Part-time Work Act,” commonly known as “Brückenteilzeit,” was implemented in 2019. The law allows employees in medium-sized and large companies to work part-time on a temporary basis, with a defined return to the original working hours. According to the IAB Establishment Panel, around 170,000 or 0.5 per cent of employees paying social security contributions took advantage of this scheme in 2022. Employees occupying positions within the primary segments of the German labour market appear to benefit from this type of temporary part-time work."
