Urban Production in Germany. Findings of a Nationwide Empiricial Data Analysis

Abstract

"After decades of separating housing from workplace, production and manufacturing were pushed out of most urban areas. Due to new technologies and architectural possibilities for mixed-use neighborhoods, the Productive City is part of an international discussion on integrated urban development. So far, empirical studies on production and manufacturing in urban and rural areas are missing on a nationwide level. Therefore, a definition of urban production that enables a data driven method is part of the first section of this paper. The analysis is based on georeferenced data on population (based on the German census) and long-time data on employment (2000-2017) from the Institute for Employment Research (IAB). A combination of these two datasets, enables a status-quo and a long-time analysis on development of urban manufacturing in Germany, including different spatial matters."
