Die Arbeitsmarktsituation in Krankenhäusern

Abstract

"Demographic change has a profound impact on the labour market in hospitals. On the one hand, the demand for health services and thus for personnel is increasing, while on the other hand, the supply of potential workers is decreasing. This article analyses the labour market situation in hospitals on the basis of administrative data from the German Federal Employment Agency for the period from 2013 to 2021. The employment structure is closely interlinked with the occupational structure and characterized by a very high proportion of women and part-time employees. The most important occupations feature significant labour shortages which could not even be reduced by the above-average wage growth in recent years. Tracing individual employment pathways shows that although employees in the central occupations often remain employed, but not necessarily in their original occupation or in hospitals. The results underline the need for hospitals to position themselves as attractive employers with good working conditions in order to successfully implement strategies for finding employees."
