Minimum Wage Increase to 12 Euros Affects More Than One Out Of Five Jobs

Abstract

"We estimate that more than one out of five jobs were paid a gross hourly wage below 12 euros in 2021. Thus, the increase of the minimum wage to 12 euros planned for October 2022 is likely to affect many jobs in the German labor market. This applies in particular to part-time jobs and marginal employment where 24 percent and 71 percent are affected, respectively. There are also clear differences in the bite of the new minimum wage between sectors. Furthermore, new hires are even more likely to be affected than existing employment relationships."
