Räumliche Differenzierung des Gründungsgeschehens in Deutschland

Abstract

"This paper gives a survey on the regional patterns of new business formation processes in West and East Germany within the first decade after reunification. Not only is the spatial differentiation in the birth of new establishments analyzed but also their survival rates. A distinct reciprocal relationship can be found between entry and survival rates, particularly for agglomeration areas in West Germany. This is the result of a selection process by market competition. Furthermore the paper deals with employment effects of newly created businesses. Between both variables only for East German regions a mediumsized correlation can be found. This is due to the fundamental restructuring of the economy during the 1990s. Because of little competition in the years after the reunification in East Germany early start-ups could gain more employment than later ones. Subsequent cohorts show a progressive adaptation to West German conditions with little or no job gains compared to the starting year. Nevertheless, on an average 40 % of new employment in German regions between 1991 and 1999 was created by new businesses." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
