Migration in Germany: Strong decrease during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

"With the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, net migration decreased in Germany in 2020 by 34 percent compared to 2019, and by 33 percent in the first half of 2021 compared to the first half of 2019. Migration patterns are significantly correlated with policy measures adopted by governments to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, a decline in international migration is associated with increasing COVID-19 mortality and infection rates and deteriorating economic conditions in destination countries."
