Recruitment Processes during the Covid-19 Pandemic: More Unemployed Job Seekers per Vacancy and Less Recruitment Difficulties

Abstract

"During the Covid-19 pandemic, the ratio of unemployed job seekers to vacancies rose for the first time since the great recession. The increase in the unemployed-to-vacancy ratio was greater for jobs with low skill requirements as compared to jobs with high skill requirements. We study how the associated decline in labor market tightness changed employers’ recruitment processes. Using the IAB job Vacancy Survey, we show that employers experienced less recruitment difficulties and shorter unexpected vacancy durations and made less often wage concessions."
