Education between discontinuity and career : Multiple training episodes

Abstract

"In Germany, a considerable number of young people undertake more than one episode of formal training. This article aims at a thorough account of the phenomenon from a life-course perspective. In particular, it looks at extent, structure, and participants of multiple training episodes and describes both types and determinants of educational careers. The analyses are based upon recent German life-history data which facilitate the study of educational careers in greater detail. The majority of multiple training episodes lead to an upgrading of qualifications. In addition, the significance of a vocational orientation is also clearly evident in combined training episodes. In general, characteristics of initial training turn out to be crucial for further training. The results also make it clear that multiple training episodes increase inter-individual differences in education rather than compensate for them. " (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
