Baby-boomers reaching advanced working age

Abstract

"In face of demographic change and the macroeconomic challenges associated with this, it will be of great importance in the future to keep the babyboomer cohorts in the system of gainful employment for as long as possible. Currently the latter are at the 'threshold to attaining a high age for gainful employment'. At the beginning of their working life, they were confronted with the increased insecurities on the labour market. Following on from this, the question is how their working life has progressed up to today. In order to examine the working biographies in more detail, we took a look at the birth cohorts 1959 and 1965, both of which were born during the so-called baby boom. Based on the results of initial sequential pattern analyses, the working biographies of both cohorts can be grouped into three types, each of which can be characterized by a differing degree of integration into employment subject to social security contributions."
