Standard and non-standard employment

Abstract

"The present study addresses the question of whether workers in standard and non-standard employment are treated equally with regard to basic employment rights such as paid vacation or paid sick leave. Workers in part-time, marginal part-time and fixed-term jobs are compared to workers in permanent full-time employment. Using data from a German employee survey, we examine whether employment rights are more often illegally withheld from non-standard workers. The results show that there is no clear-cut divide between workers in standard and non-standard jobs. Rather, for workers in marginal part-time work (so-called mini-jobs), the risk of being deprived of legal entitlements is higher than for workers in any other type of employment."
