Project

Digital and ecological transformation: Which determinants explain employment growth at the occupational level?

Project duration: 31.08.2019 to 30.10.2022

Abstract

The project examines which determinants influence employment growth at the occupational level. A particular focus of the project is on the effects of ecological transformation on the one hand and digital transformation on the other. Questions that the project wants to answer are: How are environmentally friendly job tasks and the use of new digital tools changing within occupations? Does this lead to an increasing demand for employees working in these occupations? How does the digital and ecological transformation affect qualification structure and wages within occupations? In order to answer these questions, we use an Occupational Panel for the years 2012-2017. The basis of the Occupational Panel is the employee history dataset of the IAB (BeH), which we have aggregated on the 3+5-digit level of the classification of occupations 2010 (KldB 2010). Occupation-specific indicators developed at IAB such as substitution potentials, task types, Greenness of Jobs Index (GOJI) and the Digital Tools Index (DTOX) were added. Using multivariate econometric methods, we analyse whether and to what extent occupation-specific indicators and other determinants account for employment growth.
