Project

More Interviews = More Panel Attrition? An Analysis on the Implementation and Effects of Supplement Surveys.

Project duration: 01.07.2023 to 31.07.2027

Abstract

High-frequency panels are becoming increasingly popular for several reasons. One of them is the easier implementation of questions on current important topics such as the COVID-19 pandemic or the war in Ukraine. However, most panels are conducted once a year, so adding new questions is a challenge and the topic may still be as relevant at the time of the survey as it was before. To compensate for this problem, additional surveys can be integrated into the main wave. In this way, it is much easier to respond to a new topic and collect data. On the other hand, it increases the burden on each individual respondent who has to answer not just one, but possibly several questionnaires per year. This leads to a lower response rate in the panels, which jeopardizes the usefulness of the panel. The question of whether the introduction of an additional questionnaire has an impact on panel attrition and what other challenges arise when introducing an additional questionnaire will be the focus of this project.
