Project

Does the Mode Really Matter? Mode Effects in Factorial Survey Experiments.

Project duration: 31.01.2023 to 30.12.2024

Abstract

Factorial survey experiments (FSEs), such as vignettes, are commonly used to identify true opinions on sensitive topics as well as determine differences between certain subgroups. The majority of FSEs are conducted via self-administered (mainly web) surveys, where the respondent has the opportunity to read and evaluate the various scenarios by themselves. However, many establishment surveys, such as the IAB Establishment Panel or the BeCovid establishment panel in Germany, rely on interviewer-administered interviews, such as face-to-face or telephone. To open up the opportunity for establishment surveys to conduct more accurate collection of socially sensitive topics it is useful to determine whether FSEs conducted via interviewer-administration produce similar (or different) results compared to self-administration.
