What are the Returns to Migration? Evidence from linked Austrian - German register data
Project duration: 01.09.2024 to 31.12.2028
Abstract
This project examines the returns to migration. We use a unique dataset that combines administrative data from Austria and Germany that allows us to follow the employment biographies of workers that migrate between the two countries. We analyze whether the returns to migration differ by age and gender and compare the returns wo international migration and within-country migration. First results indicate that international mobility between two similar countries is associated with earnings gains but is usually preceded by a spell of unemployment in the country of origin.
