Project

Labor demand and labor supply along the "hydrogen" value chain

Project duration: 30.09.2021 to 30.03.2025

Abstract

In June 2020, the German government adopted the National Hydrogen Strategy (NHS). Hydrogen produced via electrolysis from renewable energies is considered «green» hydrogen. It is then classified as sustainable in the long term, according to the NHS. The NHS aims to reduce CO2 emissions using green hydrogen technologies in industry, transport and the energy sector, thereby contributing to achieve the 2030 climate targets. At the same time, the competitiveness of the German economy and the opening up of new markets are to be promoted. The Coalition Agreement of 2021 increased the production targets for domestic hydrogen production and set the goal of developing Germany into a “lead market for hydrogen technologies” by 2030. With the establishment of a hydrogen value chain, the question arises of how the future labour market will be affected. The aim of the project is to identify at an early stage which occupations, qualifications and competences are needed for the development of a hydrogen value chain.
