Project

A couple perspective on parental leave-taking

Project duration: 31.03.2021 to 30.12.2024

Abstract

The project analyzes the distribution of parental leave uptake in couple households in Germany, as well as its impact on the employment trajectories of mothers and fathers. The analyses use newly created couple data on married couples in Germany, for which the individual employment biographies of both spouses have been linked. This allows for the analysis of interactions between the employment biographies of both partners, which are examined in this project in the context of career interruptions due to parenthood. In addition to investigating the relationship between mothers' employment and their partners' parental leave uptake, we also focus on factors influencing fathers' parental leave uptake and the medium- and long-term consequences of parental leave on fathers' employment trajectories.
