Project

Motherhood and Human Capital: Evidence on Training Gaps and Their Consequences

Project duration: 15.07.2024 to 01.07.2027

Abstract

This project studies the dynamics of job-related training in the context of parenthood, and its implications for the diverging labor market trajectories of men and women after childbirth. It uses the NEPS-SC6-ADIAB dataset and a staggered difference-in-differences strategy to evaluate the changes in training participation around childbirth in an event study setting. The project also determines heterogeneities in training gaps, and the roles of individuals' demand for training and firm's support for training, respectively. Lastly, the project leverages the availability of high-quality earnings information to gauge the relevance of missed trainings due to motherhood for explaining the motherhood earnings gap.
