Job creation and job destruction in Germany since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic
Project duration: 04.03.2025 to 31.12.2026
Abstract
In the period since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the German economy has been hit by a variety of shocks. These have been accompanied by a lower employment growth rate, a lower job creation rate and a higher job destruction rate. Not all sectors have responded equally to the shocks. In the years 2020 - 2023, for example, manufacturing reduced employment, while the ‘Information and Communication’, ‘Public Administration’, ‘Education’ and ‘Health and Social Work Activities’ sectors increased employment. Compared to the previous decade, these developments have led to a greater job reallocations between the sectors. Nevertheless, job reallocations within sectors were significantly higher than between sectors.
