Requirements for German language skills in Establishments
Project duration: 01.01.2024 to 31.12.2026
Abstract
This project assesses the establishments' requirements for German language skills when filling vacancies. It also examines the correlates of variation in language skill requirements between establishments. The data available on the language requirements of job vacancies in Germany is insufficient. In particular, little is known about the extent to which language requirements represent an obstacle to foreign workers and skilled workers filling vacancies. As part of Jobturbo, companies are being called upon to employ more refugees without good German language skills (below language level B2) and to provide them with further qualifications while they work. There is no current survey data on the extent to which a lack of German language skills actually represents an obstacle to the employment of foreign workers and skilled workers from a company perspective. This project therefore examines the issue on the establishment side, thereby complementing findings already available from surveys of individuals.
