Abstract

In this project, we investigate the employment history before and after unemployment benefit II recipients receive a benefit sanction. We use a 10% random sample of individuals with at least one benefit sanction between 2016 and 2018. In addition, we use data from the Employment Biographies (IEB) and the UB II Income and Benefits Statistic (LST-S) to include further information about personal characteristics and relevant information about welfare receipt. In a cluster analysis, we can identify heterogeneous groups of sanctioned welfare recipients based on to their employment history before and after a sanction. Furthermore, we perform a multinomial regression to investigate whether these types differ according to personal characteristics.
