Renate Neubäumer completed her studies in economics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, Frankfurt (Main) by gaining her degree in 1976 (Diplom) and a degree in economic education (Diplom) in 1978. Subsequently she received her Ph.D. in economics there in 1984 and completed her post-doctoral studies in 1997. Since 2004 she held the position of an Professor of Economics and Economic Policy at the University of Koblenz-Landau until 2011, when she retired.
Professor Neubäumer was appointed an IAB Research Fellow in 2005.
Her main research interests lie in the areas of labour market theory and policy (especially the evaluation of active labour market policy and the international comparison of labour markets); educational econometrics (especially dual education and further in-house training) and the distribution of income (effects on government activity).
Renate Neubäumer has published the results of her research in numerous major journals such as the Industrial Relations Journal, the International Journal of Manpower and the Zeitschrift für Arbeitsforschung, Arbeitsgestaltung und Arbeitspolitik.
