Professional career and research topics

Regina Riphahn studied economics at the University of Cologne, the University of Sussex and the University of Bonn. She received a Master of Business Administration at the University of Tennessee (1990), and a Ph.D. in economics at the University of North Carolina. After completing her doctorate, she worked as a research assistant at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.

Since 2005 Regina Riphahn has been Professor of Statistics and Empirical Economic Research at Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) and the coordinator of the Bavarian Graduate Program in Economics (BGPE). Previously, she researched and taught at the Universities of Mainz and Basel. Among others, Regina Riphahn was a member of the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat) and the chairwoman of the German Data Forum. Currently, she is vice president of the German Academy of Sciences – Leopoldina and the German Economic Association (Verein für Socialpolitik).

She was appointed an IAB Research Fellow in 2024.

Regina Riphahn’s research focuses on social policy, labour market research and population economics.

Her research findings have been published in numerous major journals, such as the Journal of the European Economic Association, Journal of Development Economics, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Journal of Human Resources and Journal of Population Economics.
