Jeffrey Smith studied economics and computer science at the University of Washington and took up a master’s programme in economics at the University of Chicago. After graduating in 1987, he received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago in 1996.
Having earned his Ph.D., Jeffrey Smith taught at the University of Western Ontario, the University of Maryland and the University of Michigan. He has been Professor of Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison since 2018.
Jeffrey Smith was appointed an IAB Research Fellow in 2024.
In his research, Jeffrey Smith focuses on labour economics and public economics; he is particularly interested in methods for the evaluation of social programs such as job training for the disadvantaged.
His research findings have been published in numerous major journals such as Review of Economic Studies, Journal of Economic Perspectives, Review of Economics and Statistics and Journal of Labor Economics.
