Gerard van den Berg completed a bachelor’s degree in econometrics in 1983, a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 1984 and a master’s degree in econometrics in 1985 at the University of Groningen (Netherlands). In 1990, he earned his doctorate from Tilburg University.

After completing his studies, Gerard van den Berg was a Professor at the VU Amsterdam, Princeton University and the Stockholm School of Economics, among others, before taking up the position of Alexander von Humboldt Professor of Econometrics and Empirical Economics at the University of Mannheim in 2009. He is currently Professor of Economics at the University of Groningen as well as a Fellow of the Econometric Society and research fellow of IFAU (Uppsala), ZEW (Mannheim), CEPR (London) and of IZA (Bonn).

Gerard van den Berg was appointed an IAB Research Fellow in 2024.

Gerard van den Berg conducts research in the fields of applied microeconometrics and labour economics, notably on unemployment, occupational mobility, policy evaluations and the interaction between health and work.

His research findings have been published in numerous major journals such as Econometrica, Review of Economic Studies, International Economic Review, Journal of Economics, American Economic Review or Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B.
