Christina Gathmann graduated from the Humboldt University of Berlin in 1998 with a degree in economics and a degree in social sciences. In 2004, she earned her Ph.D. at the University of Chicago.

After that, she spent five years at Stanford University and two years at the University of Mannheim. She has been Professor of Labour Economics and New Political Economy at the University of Heidelberg since 2011. Since 2020, she has headed the Labour Market Department at the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER) and is affiliated professor at the University of Luxembourg.

She was appointed an IAB Research Fellow in 2024.

Christina Gathmann’s research focuses on the economics of the public sector, labour economics, policy evaluation, migration and new political economy. She made substantial contributions on the role of human capital in the labour market, migration and integration as well as policy evaluation spanning immigration, education, family and health policies.

She has published her research findings in numerous major journals such as Journal of European Economic Association, American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, Economic Journal or Journal of Labor Economics.
