Professional career and research topics

Following her studies in Freiburg, Paris and Berlin, Lena Hipp assumed the role of labour market consultant in the German Bundestag from 2003 to 2005. In 2011, she was awarded her doctorate from Cornell University (USA). From 2010 to 2012, she worked as a research associate in the project “Institutional Conditions of the Relationship between Atypical Employment and Social Inequality in Europe” at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center, where she headed the “Work & Care” research group from 2012 to 2023. From 2017 to 2022, Lena Hipp was also Professor of Social Stratification, with a specialisation in Work and Organization, at the University of Potsdam. Since May 2023, she has held the position of Professor of Social Inequality and Social Policy at the same institution, while also serving as a Research Professor for Work, Family and Social Inequality at the WZB.

Lena Hipp was appointed an IAB Research Fellow in 2025.

Her research interests include Social Inequality, Sociology of work, labor markets, gender, and family, Welfare states and social policy, Organizational sociology, Research methods.

Lena Hipp has published her research findings in numerous renowned journals such as Work and Occupations, Social Forces, European Sociological Review, Organization, Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, Journal of Marriage and Family, and Journal of European Social Policy.
