Gabriel Ahlfeldt studied Economics in Freiburg and Madrid, before completing a Master’s and Diploma degree at the Free University of Berlin in 2006. After gaining his doctorate at the University of Hamburg in 2008, he was awarded a habilitation there in 2012. In 2009, he joined the London School of Economics as a lecturer, where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2013 and Full Professor in 2020. Since 2024, he has held the Chair of Econometrics in the School of Business and Economics at Humboldt University, Berlin.

Ahlfeldt is also a Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics and faculty of the Berlin School of Economics. Since 2018, he is the editor of Regional Science and Urban Economics.

Gabriel Ahlfeldt was nominated a IAB Research Fellow in 2025.

He considers himself a quantitative spatial economist. His primary field is urban economics, but his research cuts across many fields such as environment, finance, labour, political economy, and real estate.

Gabriel Ahlfeldt has published the results of his research in various well-known journals, such as Econometrica, American Economic Review: Insights, Journal of the European Economics Association, Review of Economics and Statistics and Economic Journal.
