Professional background
Dr Julia Reinold is a researcher at the Department of “Migration, Integration and International Labour Market Research” (INTER) at the IAB since April 2026, where she works on the “International Mobility Panel of Migrants in Germany” (IMPa). Her research focuses on highly skilled migration, labour migration, migration drivers and decision-making, as well as migration policy, with particular attention to retention in destination countries and onward migration. She uses quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods approaches. Beyond her research, she is actively engaged in the Board of the Standing Committee on Migrant Transnationalism (MITRA) of the International Migration Research Network (IMISCOE).
Before joining the IAB, she held postdoctoral positions at Erasmus University Rotterdam and Studio Europa Maastricht/Maastricht University, where she worked on the Horizon Europe project Link4Skills and researched how migration and non-migration policies shape the decision-making processes of highly skilled migrants in different European destination countries. In the fall of 2024, she was a visiting researcher at the nccr – on the move in Neuchâtel, Switzerland.
She completed her PhD at Maastricht University/UNU-MERIT on how destination countries can better attract and retain highly educated migrants. Prior to her doctoral research, she worked as a research officer in UNU-MERIT’s Migration Group, contributing to projects commissioned by European Union institutions as well as international and development organisations.
