Irena Kogan studied Foreign Languages and Pedagogics at the Kherson State University (Ukraine) from 1990 to 1995. After receiving her diploma, she completed M.A. studies in Sociology and Anthropology at the Tel Aviv University (Israel) from 1997 to 2000 and doctoral studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Mannheim from 2000 to 2006. Kogan was Professor of Sociology, especially Social Structure Analysis, at the University of Bamberg from 2007 to 2009. Since 2009, she has held the Chair of Sociology and Comparative Society at the University of Mannheim.
Irena Kogan is a member of the European Academy of Sociology and associate editor of the European Sociological Review.
Her research interests lie in the areas of integration of immigrants and ethnic stratification, social inequality, transition from the education system to the labour market, comparative social research and methods of empirical social research.
