Choosing a career path: the challenges

Choosing a career and course of study is one of the most important personal decisions young people make, as it sets the course for their future working life in the long term. It therefore also has an impact on their opportunities for personal development, social status and economic security.

What role do career guidance and counselling services play in career choices? What impact do digital and ecological transformation have on training and careers? And which training or degree programmes offer secure long-term prospects on the labour market? How do young professionals and companies find each other? The IAB addresses these and other questions relating to the topic of ‘young people entering working life’ in its research.

On this special page, we have compiled IAB publications and projects on this topic for you.

They also include background information on structural data, trends and prospects for the training market, as well as theoretical approaches and empirical findings to explain career choice behaviour, motives for career choice among specific groups of people, and determining factors and influencing factors in decision-making.
