Changing Gender Status Beliefs? Implications for Gender Inequality in the Labor Market

In our Special Lecture Series, Prof. Claudia Buchmann addresses gender inequality in the labor market.

In her lecture in English, Claudia Buchmann, College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Ohio State University (USA), focuses on whether beliefs about gender status are changing and the implications for gender inequality in the labor market.

Based on research on status processes and cultural change, predictions can be made about gender status beliefs in the United States. According to this research, we might expect that men and women, although not explicitly, implicitly distinguish between competence and value by gender, that younger respondents, especially women, have less consensual beliefs about gender status, and that men are less likely to change their gender status beliefs due to loss aversion.
