Michael Lechner graduated in 1989 with a degree in economics from the University of Heidelberg (Diplom-Volkswirt) and received his doctorate in 1994 from the University of Mannheim. He gained his post-doctoral qualification (Habilitation) in 1996, also in Mannheim. Since 1998 he has been Full Professor of Econometrics at the University of St. Gallen and Director of the Swiss Institute for Empirical Economic Research since 2008.
Professor Lechner has been a Research Fellow of IAB since 2005.
His research interests focus mainly on the development and improvement of econometric methods for causal analyses in the field of microeconometrics; as well as questions from the fields of sports, health, and labour economics.
Michael Lechner has published his research in numerous major journals, such as the Journal of Econometrics, the Zeitschrift für Wirtschaft- und Sozialwissenschaften, the European Journal of Population, and the German Economic Review.
