John M. Abowd graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Notre Dame (Indiana, USA) in 1973 and received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago in 1977. He was Director of the Labor Dynamics Institute, Director of Graduate Studies in Economics and founding member of the Faculty of Computing and Information Science at Cornell University.
Abowd is currently the Edmund Ezra Day Professor Emeritus of Economics, Statistics and Data Science at Cornell University (Ithaca, USA), and Associate Director for Research and Methodology and Chief Scientist at the United States Census Bureau. He is the first recipient of the 2022 Edward Lazear Prize for excellence in research, exemplary service to the field, and contributions to civil society.
He has been a Research Fellow at IAB since 2013.
His current research interests include international and comparative workplace studies; executive compensation; collective bargaining; and the econometric tools of labour market analysis.
John M. Abowd has published widely in major economics and statistical journals, such as the American Economic Review, Econometrica, the Review of Economics and Statistics, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of the American Statistical Association, the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, and the Journal of Econometrics.
